RaQia Lowo's School Visits

Up CLose and Personal lol.jpg

I have over 25 years of experience in education and enjoy working with children in and out of the classroom.

My heart is to help the whole child succeed, even if that means adding a song and dance to grab their fleeting attention.

In today's world, educators compete with social media and entertainment, my school visits bring a little extra to the table by combining the author's piece with academic rap, author/student Q&A, and motivational speaking.

I write books for reluctant readers with an urban voice to stimulate engagement and make reading enjoyable. It would be my honor to visit your school and contribute to your literacy program.

School Visits Options

BOOK CONCERTS, CLASSROOM AND VIRTUAL VISITS

All sessions include an upbeat call & response to encourage student participation and a motivational rap or message encouraging students to succeed.

My Q&A session is two-sided. First, students ask me questions, then I flip the script and ask them questions pertaining to the book’s subject matter.

My presentations are best suitable for grades 3rd - 6th.

BOOK CONCERTS

This lively interactive author’s visit opens with an upbeat call & response and academic rap to encourage student success and participation.

The visit includes a chapter reading and an interactive Team Weekend Vs. Team Zay Activity. Saturday School’s game is retention focused. Snow Day’s activity is a bully-awareness game and discussion based on book's subject matter.

CLASSROOM VISITS

This author’s visit includes chapter reading and discussion, along with a Team Weekend Vs. Team Zay Game or writing prompt.

VIRTUAL VISITS

Virtual visits follow the same format as a classroom visit, but can be tailored to your school's needs.

Author Visit Booking Options

Three 50–55-minute sessions include a chapter reading, Q&A, a book signing, small group book chat or open dialogue/mentoring session.

Depending on schedule, I may be able to add a fourth session for an additional fee.

I am happy to share visits between schools.

One-session 50 – 55-minute author visits with RaQia Lowo are available in Metro Atlanta.

This visit includes a motivating opening and closing activity, a chapter reading, two-sided Q&A, and book signing.

"If you're a believer in teaching the whole child, Weekend and Zay: Saturday School, is an excellent book to have in your classroom library. RaQia Lowo's keen way of developing the storyline and characters makes any discussion on friendship, emotions, family, student's interests, helping others, etc....flawless."

About the Weekend & Zay Series

Images of book characters and think bubbles wiuth words

Weekend and Zay is a fun story about friendship, differences of opinion, and conflict/resolution. The book is written for grade levels 1 – 4, ages 7 – 12 years old, and geared towards reluctant readers or older students reading below grade-level.

This slice-of-life story highlights two Black boys and shares their joy and pain, making the characters relatable and a heartfelt read for all.

This chapter book makes an engaging supplemental resource in the classroom while teaching SEL standards.

anti-bullying program.

Book 2 - Weekend and Zay: Snow Day can be used in conjunction with a school anti-bullying program.

During my author visits, students will play a fun interactive "What is a bully" game called, “Bully or Nah?”

This is a gameshow-type game where kids will be presented with questions centering around the book and real-life scenarios. The goal is to approach this from a bully awareness standpoint, versus a GOTCHA tactic.

Let’s be honest, in the age of technology we’ve all bullied or aided a bully in one way or another.

Let's get the conversation started!

- What is a bully?

- Why do people bully?

- How can we identify bullying behavior?

- And how can we stop it within ourselves?

These questions and more will be a part of the open dialogue in this fun activity.
